https://youtu.be/AwsPYw4YLVk
A personal note at first – the flat Earth thing – when you told your story I 100% understood because it happened to me too! I met a really interesting guy and we met a couple of times and then I invited him to my house for dinner with a group of my friends and…. He opened up that insane and stupid topic and wouldn’t stop. It was crazy because he was a very intelligent guy in every other way but he had been sucked in by those YouTube videos and once he got going it just wouldn’t stop.
It was my first experience of this type of – I don’t know what you call it but, it’s simply not factual and it’s so easy to debunk and its such a ridiculous theory. There are so many simple things I asked “OK, so if it is a flat disc, then how did I fly from Brazil to South Africa in basically the same time as if I flew from two points further north – in a flat earth that flight would have been twice as long” and he had an insane answer that I can’t even remember it was so weird – like gravity devices in the plane or something – but he had an answer… It was just nuts..
Anyhow, it was an eye opener.
And yes, it’s far different than an opinion, it’s far different than a Slightly different interpretation. It’s factually just simply not there.
Like the other examples that you bring up.
So, toward the US right now. It is hard to imagine it’s happening here but….. Yes, I’m a Democrat, yes I don’t vote for Republicans but my father was one and he was a man of facts who I respected and he would never imagine a situation where there was an attack at the US capital that we all saw on TV in which people died….
And we have people a huge number of people saying it wasn’t an attack, that it wasn’t violent, that even though there are all sorts of records of the participants actively saying they planned to capture and kill some congress people that it actually wasn’t that.
And I want to emphasize in relation to myself, my father, the idea of having Democrats and Republicans and also that I have friends who are Republicans that I 100% think it’s actually important to have disagreement and ideas mixing – that two parties are a good thing and that even more might be better so I’m not saying that Republican ideas are bad
What I am worried about is this idea that people can’t say “look, here’s walhat happened on TV, it is what it is, people factually died and did this so can we talk about it at that level and figure this stuff out?”
And, the concern of yours seems to be that idea as well – when pure fact, easily viewable and like 2+2=4 but someone says – no, it’s 6…. That is of real concern.
So yes, your idea that the theme is current – I don’t know if I made the case that it’s actually over here as well on a fashion that was clear enough that someone might say “oh, you are just a Democrat” – it was my hope to really show it’s deeper than that – and, as I sense from you – it’s troubling here as well.
I will leave with that – thank you for the super, super thought Provoking way to also learn Russian better each week!
I’m still working on my writing (and speaking) so I will complete in English again 🙂 it’s great to work through one paragraph in Russian writing as my process but it’s so cool to listen to ypir podcasts in the car and each week I feel like I understand a higher percent!
Anyhow, you don’t need to reply to this reply, I just wanted to say that your idea about how a person within a culture understands these concepts (freedom of speech, censorship – or – even what it means to make sure that they keep the forest clean) is absolutely spot on – I think the ultimate world understanding would be when millions of people “got that” – ie – that people approach a situation with a person or persons from another culture and ask “how are our cultures different and how does your lens affect how you and I can connect and interact”.
… To be continued 🙂 I think that the newest podcast surrounding the huge book also connects with this theme 🙂
And a part in English that I believe is a big part of it – in the 1960s until the mid 1990’s we had a huge government funded set of TV campaigns and especially when we only had a few TV stations until the 1980s which surrounded the idea “keep America clean” – I don’t know how many times I saw “Give A hoot don’t pollute” which was a cute owl cartoon. (probably on YouTube), also “Smokey the bear” and then some non cartoon very famous anti-litter public announcement (the “crying Indian” to look up on YouTube, a native America cries when a car drives by and throws trash)
We grew up watching them and I really think it deeply sat in and then people also passed the value to their kids. Throwing trash arround is really culturally almost taboo here.
I may be wrong about the root but the US is really in a league of its own on this one – we have problems but cleanliness isn’t one 🙂
And part in English for ideas about it (guesses 100%) but when I heard you say it I wasn’t surprised sadly from what I know of China. I have not been and I know you lived there so I’m interested in how you feel about this idea. This idea comes from speaking with a friend who is Singaporian who does a lot of business in China about lots of stuff.
So, to me your content is not excessively political and its really not about China politics at all (I’ve never heard it although I haven’t listened to every single episode but it’s a guess)
However, your content is very, very thought Provoking. It’s why I find it so intersting and it’s why you are for me the #1 Russian resource (that fact is aside from this)
It’s my idea that putting things in a global perspective and analyzing them from sort of an open question perspective is really very subversive to the Chinese government’s way they want things addressed. They don’t want too many questions and Russian With Max is a giant arena of questions.
With so many topics like for example with the global warming episode, you approached both sides fairly and evenly and asked questions without painting one side in any total fashion.
You do this with almost every topic that is even close to political and its really the opposite of Authoritarianism “This is the answer. Don’t ask again”
You are honestly their second biggest fear if not actually the first – I hope you understand this – from me is a massive compliment. It’s a loss for interested Chinese listeners who are looking for a perspective and on the other hand – as stated at the start it wasn’t a total surprise to me.
Thanks for the great work – my Russian listening is so good because of you – now if I can get my speaking and writing to that place!!!
Greg. There was and is zero evidence of election fraud. The American electoral system is a state centric, non-homogenous system but each state has a set of deeply established procedures to ensure vote count.
Donald Trump made up the lie. He was the only one who came up with it and then he sent his truly incompetent proxies (Rudy Giuliana and Sydney Powell as prime examples of people who got nothing right and Powell wound up claiming that her words were so crazy that no one would believe them… Huh??? Yes. That happened.)
Unfortunately the one literally incredible skill DJT has is to get his massive following to believe his words with zero proof.
The election was 8 million votes apart. Where did those 8 million votes come from? Really easy. The Dems were ultra motivated and factually represent a slightly greater percent of the population. Factually.
Then there were millions of anti Trump Republicans. People who know he’s a con, a thief, a rapist and a business failure, a tax cheat and a horrible bully who acts like a fifth grader who would be expelled from any school.
They are real people. They also voted for Republicans down ticket which is why… Duh…. The house wasnt a Dem blowout.
So these are basic facts.
Then the loser screams to his followers and yes, tells them to riot. That is what he did. And yes it was a riot and no, the summer riots were not the same because they didn’t plan to murder congress people (factually), they didn’t plan to stop the peaceful transfer of power and they weren’t done at the behest of the President (and look at the affidavits of the Trump mob who are in jail thee vast majority of them claiming that Trump told them to do it)
They murdered a copband put other cops in trauma. They beat them with pipes and flag poles so no, they weren’t being rhetorical screaming “hang Mike pence”.
Its really strange to hear these comments on a site where we are learning Russian. This is a super high level of mental work, decision making to do it and just in general a place in would imagine that only a person of ay least a reasonable analytical depth would come.
Notice I didn’t mention that I would think that person couldn’t be a Right leaning American thinker – that was in purpose. Trumpism requires non thinking. It requires giving up analysis. It requires accepting that bold lies are real and that easy to debunk ideas are actually valid.
I am kind of shocked to see an American as open minded and deep that they want to learn Russian parroting Trumpist lies.
